The University of Wisconsin–Madison is a public research university in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. Known simply as "Wisconsin" or UW and predating the state of Wisconsin, it is the flagship institution of the University of Wisconsin System and one of the oldest universities in the western United States. Founded in 1848, the university has nearly 44,000 students and 22,000 faculty and staff. It also operates an extension program that enrolls 124,000 students worldwide.

The university's research program is ranked among the top 10 in the United States and its graduate programs in engineering, medicine, law, business, and education are ranked among the top 25. The university is also home to the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), one of the largest university-based research foundations in the world. WARF has helped to create more than 1,000 startups and has generated over $2 billion in revenue for the university.

The university's campus is located on 936 acres (380 ha) in the heart of Madison. The campus is home to a number of notable buildings, including the State Street Brats, the Red Gym, and the Kohl Center. The university also has a number of museums and libraries, including the Chazen Museum of Art and the Memorial Library.

The university's athletic teams compete in the Big Ten Conference. The university's football team has won three Rose Bowls and the university's basketball team has won one NCAA championship. The university's other athletic teams have also won a number of national championships.
