Prostagenix is a prescription-only medication that is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland is enlarged. The active ingredient in Prostagenix is finasteride, which is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. 5-alpha-reductase is an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the hormone responsible for prostate growth. By inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase, Prostagenix reduces DHT levels, which can lead to a reduction in prostate size.
Prostagenix is available in 5-mg tablets and is taken once daily. The usual dose is one 5-mg tablet taken with or without food. Prostagenix can be taken for up to 6 months to achieve maximum benefit.
Prostagenix is generally well-tolerated, with the most common side effects being decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. These side effects are usually mild and resolve within a few weeks of starting treatment.
Prostagenix should not be taken by men who are allergic to finasteride or who have a history of liver disease. Prostagenix should also not be taken by women or children.
