The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card, is an assessment of what U.S. students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP is a continuing and nationally representative assessment of achievement in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and other academic subjects for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the U.S. Department of Education and has been conducted since 1969.

NAEP’s results provide a common measure of student achievement across the states and over time. The assessment is used to:

• Track student progress in core academic subjects and monitor changes in student achievement over time.


• Identify areas where students are struggling and need additional support.
