Future Earth is an international research program that aims to provide a knowledge base that enables global sustainability. Launched in 2012, Future Earth is a result of a merger between the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). Future Earth is governed by the Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability (STS), which is a partnership between the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Future Earth's research program is organized into four core projects:

* **Global Environmental Change and Human Security:** This project investigates the impacts of global environmental change on human security, including food security, water security, and energy security.
* **Transformations to Sustainability:** This project explores the pathways to sustainability, including the transition to renewable energy, the development of sustainable agriculture practices, and the promotion of sustainable consumption and production patterns.
* **Regional Sustainability:** This project focuses on the challenges and opportunities for sustainability in different regions of the world, including the Arctic, the tropics, and the coastal zones.
* **Global Earth Observations:** This project develops and implements global Earth observation systems to monitor the state of the planet and to track progress towards sustainability goals.

Future Earth's research is used to inform policy and decision-making at the local, national, and international levels. Future Earth also works to raise awareness of global sustainability issues and to promote public engagement in sustainability science.

Future Earth is a member of the Earth System Governance Project, which is a global research network that seeks to improve the understanding of Earth system governance and to develop new approaches to global sustainability. Future Earth is also a partner in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of 17 goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
