CUNY ranks first in the United States in awarding associate degrees and baccalaureate degrees to underrepresented ethnic groups – Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American. CUNY also enrolls more than half of all U.S. college students who identify as Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American, and more than a third of all undergraduate transfer students in the nation.

The City University of New York (CUNY) is the public university system of New York City. It is the largest urban university system in the United States, with over 275,000 students and 73 institutions: 11 senior colleges, six community colleges, one baccalaureate college, and 55 graduate and professional schools and institutes. CUNY is a member of the University System of New York (USNY) and the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). CUNY was founded in 1847 as the Free Academy of the City of New York. It became the College of the City of New York in 1866 and was renamed the City University of New York in 1961. CUNY is governed by a 15-member Board of Trustees, which is appointed by the Mayor of New York City.
