Alaska Coastal Studies (ACS), is the national leader in developing and managing coastal knowledge to empower communities to plan and prepare for change and to enhance coastal resilience in the face of multiple stressors. ACS was founded by Dr. Gary Kofinas on May 22, 2004, at the behest of the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council. In 2010, ACS was established as an independent non-profit organization to provide broader support on coastal issues throughout Alaska and the nation. Their mission is to conduct and communicate in depth scientific and local knowledge of coastal social ecological systems in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the Arctic in order to inform coastal management and policy, and to work with coastal communities and stakeholders to plan for the future by identifying opportunities and challenges, and developing adaptation strategies.

ACS has been recognized for their rigorous science, community-based research, and practical solutions for coastal communities. The International Association for Impact Assessment awarded ACS the 2014 American Crystal Apple Award for their collaborative approach to research and impact assessment in coastal Alaska. ACS also received the 2015 Governor’s Award for Rural Development for their work on community resilience planning.

ACS is an affiliate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).
