The Childrens' Literacy Movement (TheCLM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to books for underserved youth in Oregon and Washington. The organization was founded in 2008 by Dr. Kathy O'Halloran, a Portland Public Schools teacher who was concerned about the lack of access to books for her students. TheCLM has since grown to become one of the largest providers of free books to children in the Pacific Northwest, distributing over 1 million books since its inception.
TheCLM's mission is to "inspire a love of reading in every child." The organization accomplishes this mission by providing free books to children, training educators on how to use books effectively in the classroom, and advocating for policies that support literacy. TheCLM also has a number of programs that specifically target underserved youth, such as its Books for Babies program, which provides free books to newborns in low-income families, and its Reading Buddies program, which pairs volunteer mentors with children who are struggling with reading.
TheCLM is a member of the National Book Foundation and the American Library Association. The organization has been recognized for its work by a number of organizations, including the Portland Business Journal, which named TheCLM one of its "50 Most Admired Companies" in 2016.
