Southern Region AHEC, headquartered in Fayetteville, NC, is a 501 (c )(3) non-profit organization that was formed in 1972 to address the shortage of primary care providers in rural and underserved communities of North Carolina. The organization's mission is to improve the health of rural and underserved communities through education, training, and service. SRAHEC has 15 AHEC centers located throughout North Carolina, each of which is responsible for providing health professions education and training to students and practicing health professionals in their respective regions. SRAHEC also provides a variety of other services, including:

Community health assessments and planning

Health promotion and disease prevention programs

Technical assistance to health care providers

Research and evaluation

SRAHEC is a member of the National AHEC Organization, which is a network of over 330 AHEC centers located throughout the United States. AHEC centers are funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

SRAHEC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The organization is also a member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH).
