SMRT Buses operates a fleet of over 1,400 buses serving over 600 bus routes in Singapore. SMRT Taxis operates a fleet of over 10,000 taxis in Singapore. The company also provides engineering and maintenance services for its rail and bus operations. In addition, SMRT owns and operates several shopping malls and commercial properties in Singapore.

SMRT was founded in 1987 as the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit Corporation. The company was formed to take over the operation of the MRT system from the Public Utilities Board (PUB). In 1995, SMRT was privatized and listed on the Singapore Exchange. In 2001, SMRT acquired Trans-Island Bus Services, which was the largest bus operator in Singapore at the time. In 2004, SMRT acquired ComfortDelGro, which was the second largest taxi operator in Singapore.

SMRT has been involved in several controversies over the years. In 2011, the company was fined S$1 million for safety violations related to a train collision. In 2013, SMRT was fined S$2 million for failing to maintain its trains properly. In 2016, SMRT was fined S$5 million for failing to disclose safety information to the public.

Despite these controversies, SMRT remains a major player in the Singapore transport sector. The company is responsible for providing essential public transport services to millions of Singaporeans every day.
