Shaw University is a private, historically Black university in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society and is named for Elijah Shaw, a white abolitionist who donated land for the school. Shaw University is the oldest historically Black university in the South and the 11th oldest in the United States. It is classified as a baccalaureate college by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and enrolls over 2,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Shaw University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
