**SciELO South Africa** (**SSAf**) is a not-for-profit initiative of the **Foundation for Research Development** (FRD) that provides open access to a collection of peer-reviewed journals covering science, technology, and medicine in South Africa.



SSAf was launched in 2003 as part of the SciELO Network, a global initiative to promote open access to research literature in developing countries. The network is coordinated by the **SciELO Program** at the **University of São Paulo** in Brazil.



SSAf currently hosts 38 journals, all of which are indexed in international databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The journals cover a wide range of disciplines, including agriculture, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental sciences, health sciences, mathematics, and physics.



SSAf is committed to promoting open access to research literature in South Africa. The platform provides free and unrestricted access to the full text of all articles published in its journals. This makes it easier for researchers, students, and the general public to access and use the latest research findings.



In addition to providing open access to research literature, SSAf also offers a range of other services to its users. These services include:




- **A search engine** that allows users to search for articles by keyword, author, title, or journal.
- **A citation tracking service** that allows users to track the number of times their articles have been cited.
- **A repository** that allows users to store and share their research data.
- **A training program** that provides users with training on how to use the SciELO platform.



SSAf is an important resource for the South African research community. It provides open access to a wealth of research literature, and it offers a range of services to help researchers disseminate their work.
