Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is an intergovernmental organisation and the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, which entered into force on 29 April 1997. The OPCW oversees the global endeavour to permanently and verifiably eliminate chemical weapons. The OPCW is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, and has a staff of approximately 500 people. The OPCW has 193 member states, and its budget for 2023 is €84.8 million.

The OPCW's mission is to ensure the effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Convention prohibits the development, production, acquisition, stockpiling, retention, transfer, or use of chemical weapons. The OPCW also promotes the peaceful use of chemistry.

The OPCW has a number of key functions, including:

• Verifying the destruction of chemical weapons and production facilities

• Providing assistance to states with chemical weapons destruction
