New York State Unified Court System (nycourts.gov)

The New York State Unified Court System (nycourts.gov) is the largest court system in the United States. It is responsible for the administration of justice in New York State and has jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters. The court system is headed by the Chief Judge of New York State, who is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate.

The Unified Court System is divided into 11 judicial districts, each of which is responsible for the administration of justice in a specific geographic area of the state. The districts are:

1. First Judicial District: Bronx and New York Counties
2. Second Judicial District: Kings and Richmond Counties
3. Third Judicial District: Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties
4. Fourth Judicial District: Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady, St. Lawrence, Warren, and Washington Counties
5. Fifth Judicial District: Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties
6. Sixth Judicial District: Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, and Tioga Counties
7. Seventh Judicial District: Cayuga, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates Counties
8. Eighth Judicial District: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties
9. Ninth Judicial District: Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester Counties
10. Tenth Judicial District: Nassau and Suffolk Counties
11. Eleventh Judicial District: Queens County

The Unified Court System has a variety of divisions, including the Supreme Court, the Appellate Division, the Court of Claims, the Family Court, the Surrogate's Court, and the City Courts. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the state and has jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters. The Appellate Division is the intermediate appellate court and has jurisdiction over appeals from the Supreme Court and other lower courts. The Court of Claims has jurisdiction over claims against the state. The Family Court has jurisdiction over matters involving children and families. The Surrogate's Court has jurisdiction over matters involving wills and estates. The City Courts have jurisdiction over misdemeanors and other minor offenses.

The Unified Court System also has a variety of administrative offices, including the Office of Court Administration, the Office of the State Comptroller, and the Office of the Attorney General. The Office of Court Administration is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the court system. The Office of the State Comptroller is responsible for the financial management of the court system. The Office of the Attorney General represents the state in all legal matters, including matters involving the court system.
