National Interagency Fire Center - NIFC

The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is a United States government agency that coordinates all wildland fire management activities across the country. It is a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. NIFC is responsible for providing national leadership and coordination for wildland fire management, including developing and implementing fire management policies, standards, and protocols. It also provides training and technical assistance to firefighters and fire managers, and coordinates the use of resources and personnel during large-scale wildfires. NIFC is headquartered in Boise, Idaho, and has regional offices in Alaska, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.

In addition to its primary mission of wildland fire management, NIFC also plays a role in other areas of natural resource management. For example, NIFC provides support to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG), which is responsible for developing and maintaining the National Interagency Incident Management System (NIIMS). NIIMS is a standardized system for managing wildland fire incidents, and it is used by all federal, state, and local agencies that respond to wildfires. NIFC also provides support to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which is responsible for developing and maintaining fire codes and standards. These codes and standards help to ensure the safety of people and property from fire.
