NC Vision Zero is an initiative that aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries in North Carolina by 2050. The initiative was launched in 2016 by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and is supported by a coalition of partners, including law enforcement, public health organizations, and community groups.

NC Vision Zero is based on the premise that all traffic fatalities and serious injuries are preventable. The initiative focuses on four key areas:

• Education: NC Vision Zero provides educational materials to the public on the dangers of traffic crashes and how to prevent them.


• Enforcement: NC Vision Zero supports law enforcement efforts to crack down on dangerous driving behaviors, such as speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving.


• Engineering: NC Vision Zero works with transportation engineers to design and build roads that are safer for all users.


• Emergency response: NC Vision Zero supports efforts to improve the emergency response to traffic crashes in order to save lives and reduce injuries.

NC Vision Zero is making progress towards its goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries in North Carolina. In 2019, there were 1,410 traffic fatalities in North Carolina, down from 1,447 in 2018. This represents a decrease of 2.5%. NC Vision Zero is committed to continuing its work until all traffic fatalities and serious injuries are eliminated.
