National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) is the national organization responsible for the certification of occupational therapists in the United States and it has been the leading provider of occupational therapy certification since 1989. NBCOT's mission is to ensure that occupational therapists are competent and ethical providers of safe and effective occupational therapy services. NBCOT offers the Occupational Therapist Certified (OTR/L) credential, which is the recognized standard for the profession of occupational therapy in the United States.

The Occupational Therapist Certified (OTR/L) credential is a certification that is earned by occupational therapists who have met the NBCOT's requirements for education, experience, and passing a national certification examination. OTR/L-certified occupational therapists are qualified to provide a wide range of occupational therapy services, including:

NBCOT is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). NBCOT is also a member of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professions (IARP) and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT).
