National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, or National Board, is a non-profit, advanced teaching credentialing organization in the US. The organization was founded in 1987 by the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy and is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.

National Board certification is a voluntary process that teachers can complete to demonstrate their teaching effectiveness and commitment to student learning. The certification process includes four components:

• Content knowledge assessment


• Teaching practice assessment


• Students learning assessment


• Reflective practice assessment

Teachers who complete the certification process earn a National Board certificate, which is valid for five years. The certification process is rigorous, but it can be a valuable way for teachers to improve their teaching skills and knowledge.

National Board certification is recognized by many school districts and states as a sign of teaching excellence. As of 2019, more than 126,000 teachers have earned National Board certification. The organization also provides professional development opportunities for teachers, including online courses, workshops, and conferences.
