The Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) is Mississippi's largest art museum with five floors of diverse artwork. The MMA was chartered in 1911 as the “Mississippi Art Association” and was housed in Old Capitol Museum until 1976. In that year, the Museum received accreditation by the American Association of Museums and opened its present building in 1988.



The MMA is located in downtown Jackson, Mississippi and has an impressive collection of American and European art including Old Masters such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens and Edgar Degas to the Hudson River School with works by Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, and Frederic Edwin Church. More contemporary artists include Mary Cassatt, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Pablo Picasso. The Museum also has a significant collection of American Craft, Southern Folk Art, Photography and African-American Art.



In addition to its permanent collection, the Museum hosts numerous temporary exhibitions throughout the year and offers educational programs, lectures and films. The MMA is also home to the Thalia Mara Case Study House, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed house built in 1950.
