Iran Air (Persian: هواپیمایی جمهوری اسلامی ایران‎, Hepburn: Hawâpeimây-e Jomhûri-e Eslâmi-e Irân; lit. 'The Islamic Republic of Iran Airline'),[2][3][4] operating as Iran Air,[5] is the flag carrier and largest airline of Iran. It is headquartered in Tehran and operates scheduled passenger and cargo services to a variety of destinations throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Iran Air is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).[6]

The airline was founded in 1944 as Persian Air Services (PAS).[7] In 1954, the airline was renamed Iran National Airlines Corporation (INAC).[8] In 1972, the airline was renamed Iran Air.[9]

Iran Air has a fleet of over 100 aircraft, including Boeing 747s, Airbus A330s, and Fokker 100s.[10] The airline has a strong safety record and has never had a fatal accident involving a passenger jet.[11]

Iran Air is a major economic driver for Iran. The airline employs over 10,000 people and generates over $1 billion in revenue each year.[12] Iran Air is also a major player in the global aviation industry. The airline is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO).[13]

Iran Air has been the subject of some controversy in recent years. In 2019, the United States government imposed sanctions on Iran Air, accusing the airline of transporting weapons and personnel for the Iranian military.[14] Iran Air has denied these allegations.[15]
