Global Peace: gp.org Overview

GP.org is a website that provides information on the Global Peace Index (GPI). The GPI is an annual ranking of 163 countries and territories by their level of peacefulness. The index is based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, including:

Levels of violence
Ongoing domestic and international conflict
Militarization
Societal safety and security
Political terror
Homicide rate
Number of refugees and displaced persons
Access to weapons
Prison population
Political instability
Economic inequality
Perceived criminality in society
Political terror
Terrorism impact

The GPI was created by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a non-profit, non-partisan, independent think tank dedicated to shifting the world's focus to peace as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress. The IEP was founded in 2007 by Steve Killelea, a technology entrepreneur and philanthropist.

The GPI has been published annually since 2008. The 2023 GPI found that the world has become less peaceful over the past year. The average GPI score deteriorated by 0.3%, with 80 countries improving their score and 79 deteriorating. The deterioration was particularly pronounced in Europe, where the average GPI score fell by 1.1%.

The top five most peaceful countries in the 2023 GPI are:

The bottom five least peaceful countries in the 2023 GPI are:

1. Afghanistan
