The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data infrastructure funded by the world's governments and other institutions to provide open access to biodiversity data. GBIF does not itself hold original biodiversity data, but instead serves as an index or directory to data held by hundreds of institutions around the world. It now holds nearly 2 billion occurrence records, more than 19 million species pages, and over 500,000 taxonomic classifications. GBIF's data provides a comprehensive view of species occurrences across space and time, making it a unique source of information for understanding biodiversity patterns and trends. The data is essential for a range of research activities, including taxonomy, ecology, conservation, biogeography, and many others. GBIF also provides a range of tools to help users explore and use the data, including a mapping tool, an API, and a variety of data download options.

GBIF's data and tools are used by researchers, students, educators, policymakers, and others worldwide. The data is used to inform conservation decisions, identify and monitor invasive species, track the spread of diseases, and understand the impact of climate change on biodiversity. GBIF is a global partnership of over 1,200 institutions in more than 130 countries. These institutions include natural history museums, herbaria, botanical gardens, universities, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. GBIF's Secretariat is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the organization is governed by a Governing Board composed of representatives from the participating institutions.
