Fudan University (FDU; simplified Chinese: 复旦大学; traditional Chinese: 復旦大學; pinyin: Fùdàn Dàxué, Shanghainese: Fuhtã Daegaku), abbreviated as Fudan (复旦; 復旦; Fùdàn), is a public research university in Shanghai, China. It is a member of the elite C9 League of Chinese universities and is consistently ranked among the top universities in the country and the world.



Fudan was founded in 1905 during the late Qing dynasty as Fudan Public School (复旦公学; 復旦公學; Fùdàn Gōngxué) by Ma Xiangbo, an educational reformer and prominent figure in the Xinhai Revolution. The name "Fudan" is derived from a passage in the Analects of Confucius, which reads: "Gentlemanly, rich in culture, and yet respectful; fond of learning, yet never tired of it."
