The company was founded in 1902 by Herbert H. Franklin, a former bicycle manufacturer. Franklin cars were known for their innovative engineering and use of lightweight materials, which gave them a superior power-to-weight ratio and fuel efficiency compared to other cars of the time.

Franklin cars were also known for their air-cooled engines, which were designed to run cooler and more efficiently than water-cooled engines.
