First Book is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need. Founded in 1992 by Kyle Zimmer, the organization has distributed more than 200 million books to date. First Book works with a network of more than 500,000 educators, librarians, and community leaders to identify and reach children who need books the most. The organization's programs include Book Clubs, which provide free books to children in low-income families; Backpacks of Books, which provides backpacks filled with books to homeless children; and Classrooms in Need, which provides books and other supplies to underfunded classrooms.
First Book has been recognized for its work by a number of organizations, including the American Library Association, the National Education Association, and the Children's Book Council.
