The Defense Security Archival Center (DSAC), formerly known as the Safekeeping Service, was established in 1999 and reports to the Under Secretary for Administration, Office of the Secretary of Defense. DSAC functions to "support the mission of the Department of Defense (DoD) by preserving and providing access to non-electronic DoD permanent records. Preserved records provide essential information for DoD leaders to make informed decisions, for DoD historians to analyze past events, and for citizens to gain a better understanding of the DoD's past."

- Maintaining and operating the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), located in St. Louis, Missouri.
- Maintaining and operating the Federal Records Center (FRC), located in Suitland, Maryland.
