Disability Rights UK is a charity and social enterprise that promotes the human rights and equality of disabled people in the UK. We provide legal advice, run national campaigns, and work to influence policy and legislation. We believe that everyone should have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else; that disabled people should be able to live independently, make choices and participate fully in society.

Disability Rights UK was founded in 1993 by a group of disabled people who were concerned about the lack of civil rights for disabled people in the UK. The charity has since grown to become one of the leading organisations working for the rights of disabled people. We have a team of experienced lawyers, campaigners and policy experts who work to improve the lives of disabled people in the UK.

Disability Rights UK is committed to working with disabled people and their families to create a more inclusive and just society. We believe that disabled people should be able to live their lives with dignity and respect, and that they should have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Here are some of our key achievements:

• We helped to secure the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, which made it illegal to discriminate against disabled people in employment, education, and access to goods and services.


• We launched the Disability Rights Commission in 2000, which was responsible for enforcing the Disability Discrimination Act.


• We campaigned for the Equal Treatment Benchmarks, which set out minimum standards for the treatment of disabled people by public services.


• We helped to secure the Disability Living Allowance, which provides financial support to disabled people who need help with the extra costs of their disability.


• We continue to campaign for the rights of disabled people, and we are working to ensure that the UK government meets its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
