CONACYT is the acronym of the National Council of Science and Technology, a decentralized public organism of direct and executive action of the Mexican government. It is the main public institution dedicated to promoting and implementing policies of the Mexican State in the field of science and technology; the main rector of public research in Mexico and the one in charge of formulating and conducting the National Policy for Science, Technology and Innovation in order to contribute to the economic and social development of the country.

CONACYT promotes science and technology through funding, scholarships, research centers and scientific dissemination (radio, television and publishing). Among the activities that it supports and promotes are: the creation of new scientific and technological knowledge, the training of scientists and researchers, the promotion of innovation in companies, and support for the development of companies based on technology and knowledge. It also promotes public awareness policies on the importance of science.

CONACYT has been responsible for the creation of research centers such as the National Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics Institute (INAOE), the Institute for Nuclear Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Cinvestav-IPN), the National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energies (INEEL), the Center for Research in Food and Development (CIAD), the Center for Research and Technological Development in Electrotechnology (CIDETEQ), the Center for Microelectronics Research and Applications (CIAMI), the Center for Nanotechnology Research (CIRN), the Center for Research and Development in Optoelectronics (Cidop), the Center for Research and Technology of Minerals (CITMinal) and the Center for Applied Geophysics (CGA).

The CONACYT is headquartered in Mexico City and has regional offices in the cities of Monterrey, Guadalajara, León, Querétaro, Mérida, Xalapa, Puebla, and Hermosillo. It also has International Offices in Europe, Asia, and North America.
