Cavern Club was originally a jazz club at 10 Mathew Street in Liverpool, England, which later became known as the cradle of British skiffle and an early venue for the Beatles. The venue closed in 1973 owing to bankruptcy and demolition orders; the present Cavern Club (established 1984) on Mathew Street is a reconstruction of the original. The original Cavern Club was founded by Alan Sytner in January 1957. The club was a small, dark, and damp basement space, with a capacity of only 250 people. Despite its lack of amenities, the club quickly became popular with local skiffle and jazz musicians. In 1961, the Beatles began playing regularly at the Cavern Club. The club became their regular haunt and played 292 times at the venue. The Beatles' residency at the club helped to raise their profile and led to their eventual signing to Parlophone Records. The Cavern Club continued to operate until 1973 when it was closed due to bankruptcy and demolition orders. The club was demolished in 1973 and the site was redeveloped. The present Cavern Club was opened in 1984 at 10 Mathew Street. The new club is a reconstruction of the original, and it features many of the same features as the original, including the stage, the dance floor, and the bar. The Cavern Club is still a popular tourist destination, and it continues to host live music events.
