The Bush Foundation supports organizations and initiatives that work to improve the quality of life for the people of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and the 23 Native American nations that share the region. The foundation's grantmaking focuses on six areas: education, economic development, environment, arts and culture, health, and civic engagement.

The Bush Foundation was founded in 1953 by Archibald Bush, a St. Paul businessman and philanthropist. Bush was inspired to create the foundation after a trip to Europe, where he saw firsthand the devastation caused by World War II. He believed that the best way to prevent future wars was to invest in education and other programs that would help people build better lives.

Since its founding, the Bush Foundation has awarded more than $1 billion in grants to organizations and initiatives that are working to make a difference in the lives of people in the Upper Midwest. The foundation's grantmaking is guided by a set of core values that include:
