The Office of Justice Programs (OJP), a component of the U.S. Department of Justice, provides federal leadership in developing the nation's capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist victims. OJP is the largest grantor of criminal justice funding to state and local governments as well as the largest funder of research and development in criminal justice. OJP's mission is to provide national leadership in the development and implementation of effective, evidence-based crime prevention and justice programs. OJP's goal is to make our nation a safer place for all Americans.

OJP is organized into six bureaus:

* The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) provides grants to state and local governments to support a wide range of criminal justice programs, including law enforcement, crime prevention, victim services, and criminal justice research and development.
* The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. NIJ's mission is to advance scientific research to enhance the understanding of crime and justice issues and to develop effective crime prevention and criminal justice policies and programs.
* The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) provides leadership in federal efforts to address the problem of juvenile delinquency. OJJDP's mission is to reduce juvenile delinquency and improve the juvenile justice system.
* The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is responsible for the care and custody of federal prisoners. BOP's mission is to protect society by confining offenders in a safe, humane, and cost-effective manner.
* The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. The FBI's mission is to protect the United States from terrorism, foreign intelligence threats, and other high-priority crimes through law enforcement, intelligence, and national security investigations.
* The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is the lead federal agency responsible for combating drug trafficking and distribution. DEA's mission is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to justice those who violate them.

OJP is a vital part of the U.S. Department of Justice and plays a critical role in protecting our nation from crime and violence.
