Cornell University is a private Ivy League research university in Ithaca, New York. It is the northernmost Ivy League institution and the first established in New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell's founding principle, a "land-grant" motto taken from a passage in the Morrill Land-Grant Acts of 1862, which states that the university was founded "to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes" and "to increase knowledge in science, agriculture, and the mechanic arts". The university is home to the Johnson Art Museum, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell Botanic Gardens, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and one of the world's largest university libraries, the Cornell University Library.

Cornell is organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions. The most popular undergraduate colleges are the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. Cornell offers more than 4,000 courses and nearly 100 majors in over 115 fields of study. Cornell is also home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Cornell Center for Advanced Computing, the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source, and the Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility.

Cornell is a member of the Ivy League and the Association of American Universities. The university has been ranked among the top 15 universities in the world by major ranking organizations such as QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
