The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is a labor union that represents 1.7 million pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, school-related personnel, higher education faculty and staff, nurses and other healthcare professionals, and public employees. The AFT is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and is the second-largest teachers' union in the United States, behind the National Education Association (NEA).

The AFT was founded in 1916 as the American Federation of Teachers of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). The AFT's first president was Charles B. Stillman, a teacher from Chicago. The AFT's early years were marked by a focus on improving the wages and working conditions of teachers. In the 1930s, the AFT played a key role in the formation of the Social Security system and the National Labor Relations Act.

In the 21st century, the AFT has continued to be a leading voice for public education. The AFT has supported the Common Core State Standards and the Every Student Succeeds Act. The AFT has also played a key role in the fight against school vouchers and charter schools.
