The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) is an independent federal agency that promotes the preservation, enhancement, and sustainable use of our nation's diverse historic resources, and advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy. We work in partnership with federal agencies, state and local governments, Native American tribes and organizations, and private individuals and organizations to:

- Provide advice on the preservation of historic properties and advise the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy
- Review and comment on federal undertakings that may affect historic properties
- Administer the National Historic Preservation Fund
- Provide training and technical assistance on historic preservation
- Cooperate with international organizations on historic preservation issues

The ACHP was established by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA). The NHPA is the nation's primary historic preservation law. It sets forth a national policy for the preservation of historic properties and establishes the ACHP to advise the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy.

The ACHP is composed of 25 members who are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The members include:

- The Secretary of the Interior
- The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
- The Secretary of Agriculture
- The Secretary of Transportation
- The Secretary of Defense
- The Administrator of the General Services Administration
- The Chairman of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
- The President of the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers
- The President of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards
- 15 other members who are appointed by the President from a variety of backgrounds, including historians, architects, archaeologists, and preservationists

The ACHP meets quarterly to review and comment on federal undertakings that may affect historic properties. The ACHP also provides advice to the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy.

The ACHP's work is essential to preserving our nation's historic heritage. The ACHP helps to ensure that federal actions do not harm historic properties and that our nation's historic resources are preserved for future generations.
