The Map Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that creates accessible mapping projects for individuals and communities around the world. By making mapping tools and data more accessible, The Map Academy empowers people to create positive change in their communities.

The Map Academy was founded in 2010 by Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso, a geographer and community organizer. Kelso was inspired to start The Map Academy after seeing how maps could be used to address social and environmental issues in his own community.

Since its founding, The Map Academy has worked on a wide range of projects, including:

* Creating maps of food deserts and other areas with limited access to healthy food
* Mapping the distribution of lead poisoning in children
* Developing tools to help people create their own maps
* Providing training and support to community groups using maps for social change

The Map Academy's work has been recognized by a number of organizations, including the National Geographic Society, the American Association of Geographers, and the United Nations. In 2016, The Map Academy was awarded the Google Earth Engine User Community Award for its work using Google Earth Engine to map food deserts.
