State Board of Education of the District of Columbia (SBOE) is an independent agency of the District of Columbia government. The SBOE is responsible for overseeing public education in the District of Columbia. The SBOE was established in 1974 by the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. The SBOE is composed of 11 members, who are appointed by the Mayor of the District of Columbia and confirmed by the Council of the District of Columbia for four years. The SBOE elects a chairperson and vice-chairperson from among its members.

The SBOE's mission is "to ensure that all students in the District of Columbia have access to a high-quality education that prepares them to succeed in college, career, and life." The SBOE's goals are to:

* Improve student achievement
* Close the achievement gap between different groups of students
* Increase graduation rates
* Prepare students for college and career
* Make sure that all schools are safe and supportive learning environments

The SBOE has a number of powers and responsibilities to help it achieve its mission and goals. These include the power to:

* Set educational standards for the District of Columbia
* Approve and monitor charter schools
* Hold public hearings
* Issue subpoenas
* Adopt rules and regulations

The SBOE is committed to working with parents, teachers, administrators, and the community to improve public education in the District of Columbia. The SBOE believes that all students can succeed and that it is the SBOE's responsibility to provide them with the opportunity to do so.
