REFED (The National Eating Disorders Association) is leading the fight for eating disorders prevention, treatment, and research. They work to raise awareness about eating disorders, provide support for individuals and their families, and advocate for policies that promote recovery. Eating disorders can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. They are serious mental illnesses that can lead to a variety of health complications and even death. However, with early diagnosis and treatment, most people with eating disorders can make a full recovery. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 28.8 million people in the United States will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime. 10 million of those people are men. Every 52 minutes someone dies from an eating disorder. 81% of people with eating disorders are female. People with eating disorders are often ashamed of their illness and may try to hide it from others. This can make it difficult to get help. However, there are many resources available to help people with eating disorders.

REFED was founded in 1979 as the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). In 1993, ANAD changed its name to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). In 2014, NEDA merged with the Eating Disorders Coalition to form REFED. REFED is a member of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC).

REFED has a variety of programs and services to help people with eating disorders, their families, and their loved ones. These programs and services include:

• A helpline that provides information and support to people with eating disorders and their loved ones


• A network of treatment centers that provide specialized care for people with eating disorders


• A research program that supports research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of eating disorders


• Advocacy efforts to promote policies that support people with eating disorders and their families


• Educational programs to raise awareness about eating disorders and their impact
