The Ohio State University (OSU) is a public land-grant research university in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college began with 24 students and 12 faculty members on September 17, 1873. It was renamed The Ohio State University in 1878. Ohio State is the third-largest university campus in the United States by enrollment. As of 2019, the university had 67,015 students (46,894 undergraduates and 20,121 postgraduates) and 5,123 faculty members.

The university has an annual research budget of $1.05 billion and is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of American Universities, and the Universities Research Association. OSU is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity."

Ohio State's athletic teams are collectively known as the Buckeyes and compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of the Big Ten Conference. The university has won a total of 38 national championships, including eight in football and 11 in men's basketball.

Notable alumni of Ohio State include Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon; John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth; and Woody Hayes, the legendary football coach who led the Buckeyes to five national championships.
