Missing Maps is a humanitarian project that uses OpenStreetMap, free and open map of the world, to map the most vulnerable and underserved communities. This project is a collaboration between the American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and is supported by a large community of volunteers all over the world. Missing Maps aims to provide up-to-date and accurate maps of these communities so that humanitarian organizations can better respond to crises and improve access to essential services.


The project focuses on mapping areas that are not well-mapped or that have been affected by disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, or conflict. Missing Maps volunteers use satellite imagery to trace roads, buildings, and other features on a map, and they also collect information about the population, infrastructure, and access to services in these communities. This data is then used to create maps that can be used by humanitarian organizations to plan and respond to crises.


Missing Maps has been used to map communities in over 100 countries around the world, and it has helped humanitarian organizations to reach more people in need, provide more effective assistance, and save lives. The project has also been used to support disaster preparedness and response efforts, and to advocate for the rights of vulnerable communities.
