WEBEgremont, Cumbria. 23 Jan 2011. #2. The 26 is the important number. Most 26" wheel bikes will take down to 1.5" easily enough so they should fit fine. If you are looking at riding on roads you may want to go a bit narrower than 2" as the tyres will be lighter and can hold a higher pressure.

    Are 26 x 1 3/8 and 26 x 1.4 tyres interchangeable?

    WEB12 Jul 2010. #4. Fractional inch sizes are based on the external diameter of the tyre, not the size of the rim. To get the rim diameter you subtract twice the tyre height from the tyre diameter. 26 x 1 3/8" = 25.4 x (26 - 2x1.375) = 590mm. 26 x 1 1/4" = 25.4 x (26 - 2x1.25) = 597mm. Decimal inch sizes like 1.4 are all for 559mm MTB rims.

WEB21 Nov 2017. #2. Hi and Karl. The ETRTO (20-559) number is the one that gives the best information for the wheel and the important number in that lot is 559. That is your wheel diameter at the bead seat in mm so the tyre must match that. The other numbers show me that you have a 20mm width rim and that the tyre is a 54mm width.

WEB4 Apr 2011. #5. I've a feeling 26" x 1-1/4" (ISO 597mm) are unlikely in a bike from the 1970s. 26" x 1-3/8" (ISO 590mm) are more likely IMO. I did manage to buy some steel rim 26" x 1-1/4" a couple of years ago from Freemans, for a rebuild on a 1940s BSA, but Freemans no longer list either rim or complete wheel.
