The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for coordinating global telecommunications networks and services. ITU's mission is to connect the world's people, businesses, and governments through information and communication technologies (ICTs). The organization was founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union and has been headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, since 1948.

ITU is a member of the United Nations Development Group and works closely with other UN agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The organization also collaborates with a wide range of international and regional organizations, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

ITU's work is divided into three sectors:

* The Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) develops technical standards for telecommunications networks and services.
* The Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) manages the global radio spectrum and develops regulations for the use of radio frequencies.
* The Development Sector (ITU-D) promotes the development of telecommunications networks and services in developing countries.

ITU also has a number of specialized units, such as the Global Cybersecurity Agenda (GCA) and the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development. The GCA is a global initiative that aims to improve cybersecurity by promoting collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society organizations. The Broadband Commission is a public-private partnership that works to promote broadband access and affordability around the world.

ITU is a leading source of information and data on the global telecommunications sector. The organization publishes a wide range of reports and statistics on topics such as broadband access, mobile phone penetration, and internet usage. ITU also provides technical assistance and capacity building to developing countries to help them improve their telecommunications infrastructure and services.
