American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. ANSI is the official U.S. representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and, via the U.S. National Committee, to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). ANSI is also a member of the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC).

ANSI's mission is to enhance U.S. global competitiveness and the American quality of life by promoting, facilitating, and safeguarding the integrity of the voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system. ANSI accredits standards developers, certification bodies, and testing laboratories. It also provides training and educational services on standards and conformity assessment.

ANSI was founded in 1918 as the American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC). In 1928, AESC was reorganized and renamed the American Standards Association (ASA). In 1966, ASA merged with the United States of America Standards Institute (USASI) to form ANSI.

ANSI is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has a staff of over 100 employees. It is governed by a board of directors that includes representatives from industry, government, labor, and consumer organizations.
